“Globalization without social justice… is generating growth without enough quality jobs…a steady increase in productivity, but not in wages… advances in combating extreme poverty, but deepening inequality,” Juan Somavia, ILO Director General said yesterday in his keynote address to the 97th International Labour Conference in Geneva.Mr. Somavia said the ILO had a unique opportunity to play a central role in an emerging system of global governance which combined financial stability and investment for development with fair trade and decent work.Addressing the current financial problems on world markets, he said “We have heard much about the subprime financial crisis. But there is also what I would call a crisis of “subprime work” – substandard and vulnerable jobs – without fundamental rights, without basic security, without prospects for mobility and dignity.”Mr. Somavia argued in his speech that the international community needed to build on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) – a set of anti-poverty targets to be achieved by 2015 – by developing a comprehensive “social floor” to prevent people from falling into destitution and to help them overcome poverty and move up the ladder of opportunity.“We can significantly expand employment opportunities for the 3 billion people living in poverty,” he said. “We can help move to a jobs-intensive and sustainable growth pattern. We can consolidate respect for rights and dialogue as a productive road to peace,” he added. 10 June 2008The international community urgently needs to take counter measures to head off “globalization without social justice,” according to the head of the United Nations International Labour Organization (ILO). read more

OSU junior midfielder Johnny Pearson (30) during a game on March 19 in Denver. Credit: Courtesy of OSUThe Ohio State men’s lacrosse team is looking to end its three-game losing skid Saturday when it’s set to face second-ranked Notre Dame at Ohio Stadium. The matchup against the Fighting Irish serves as the coda to a grueling four-game nonconference stretch for the Buckeyes in which they faced three other teams in the nation’s top 20, including No. 1 Denver last Saturday.“I think the biggest thing is just staying the course,” said senior midfielder and co-captain Kacy Kapinos. “In these tough times we have to come together, and as a unit we have to work harder.”Redshirt junior goalie Tom Carey said the team does not have to make any major changes. Instead, the Buckeyes need to just work on the little things.“Collectively as a group, we’re just focusing on getting back to the basics and working out the little kinks,” he said. “That starts with just coming out every practice with energy and just having a little bit more of an edge. We know we’re not too far off.”OSU has dropped 12 straight to Notre Dame, with its last win coming in 2004. Senior defender Robby Haus said the team is looking forward to the opportunity to end both losing streaks on Saturday.“In my career here, I haven’t beaten them,” he said. “That does give you a little bit more of a push when the game starts to have that drive to take them down.”To do so, the Scarlet and Gray will need more offensive output than was provided last year when the Buckeyes were shut out 9-0. Kapinos said the offense has been working hard to create more scoring opportunities, which will be needed against a Notre Dame defense that is tied for first in the nation, allowing only 6.33 goals per contest.“(The offense) has been working all week — working hard, cycling the ball, moving very quickly,” Kapinos said. “Coach (Brad) Ross has done a great job … of preparing them and getting them ready, and I know he’ll have them ready for this week.”Notre Dame boasts three preseason first-team All-Americans in senior attacker Matt Kavanagh, junior midfielder Sergio Perkovic and senior defender Matt Landis. However, OSU coach Nick Myers said the team is ready to play against a tough opponent despite its recent losses.“They’re an excellent team, arguably one of the best teams in the country at home,” Myers said. “We’re excited about the opportunity to compete against a quality opponent.”  Correcting errors on defenseOSU is looking to bounce back after suffering a 15-6 defeat against Denver last Saturday. The Buckeyes were only down 7-5 heading into the fourth quarter, but they surrendered eight goals while only scoring one to lead to the lopsided loss.Myers attributed the defensive meltdown to a combinations of factors, including fatigue and excellent offense by Denver.“At the end of the day, you have to make stops,” he said.Kapinos emphasized the need to play the full 60 minutes.“I think we just (have) to play the whole game,” he said. “We did well the first three quarters, and in the fourth quarter we kind of had a lapse.”The Buckeye defense will have to be strong in the fourth quarter on Saturday. The Fighting Irish have scored 20 goals in the final period this season, five more than any other quarter, meaning a second consecutive final-period meltdown could spell trouble for OSU. What’s nextThe Buckeyes are primed to begin conference play on April 3 against Penn State at noon. Kapinos said the team is looking forward to facing familiar opponents.“The Big Ten is very exciting, a bunch of rivalry games. We have friends on those teams,” Kapinos said. “We played a couple of those teams two or three times last year… so we kind of know what each other has.”Myers, however, didn’t want to get too far ahead, stressing the importance to focus on Saturday’s game against Notre Dame.“When the time comes to shift gears and focus on that part of our season, we will,” he said. The matchup against the Fighting Irish is set to begin at 1 p.m. read more

first_img Tags The US Census Bureau has reportedly asked tech giants to help them fight fake news. Getty Images To try to fend off disinformation that could taint the 2020 US census, the Census Bureau reportedly is enlisting help from companies that have lots of experience with fake news: Facebook, Google and Twitter. The bureau has gotten “initial commitments” from the three tech giants to aid in combating disinformation campaigns, according to a report Wednesday by Reuters. The census would be a prime target for foreign and domestic agents because of the impact the numbers have on US election districts and how $800 billion in federal spending would be allocated each year. Facebook, Google, Twitter and the Census Bureau didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The tech giants have been in the hot seat since Russian operatives used their platforms to spread fake news and sow division during the 2016 US presidential election. Since then, the companies have boasted hiring thousands of human content moderators and developing artificial intelligence tools to fight against the attacks. The disinformation strategies for the census could take several forms, Reuters said. Those include distributing fake data by doctoring ads or news articles, or posing as different demographic groups to spread misinformation.  0 Post a comment Facebook Google Twitter Share your voice Tech Industrylast_img read more

first_img Black leather jacket, Eerie black, Outer space, Licorice, Onyx and plain old Black. These are the names of Crayola’s blackest of black crayons. Sure, they’re all jet black, but none of them have anything on “Vantablack,” an extraordinary new nanofiber believed to be the darkest black on Earth, even darker than NASA’s “super-black.”Not to beat this unusually dark horse dead, but Vantablack is actually so deeply black that your eyes can’t really see it at all, only the area surrounding it. And we’re not kidding when we say looking at this “strange, alien” stuff is like gazing into a black hole. Not a deep, dark cave kind of hole. Think darker. The kind of black hole found in outer space.Cue the happy, clapping ninjas. This stuff is seriously dark and deceptive. Check out this video from Yahoo:Related: Say Hello to the Robotic Personal Assistant of Your DreamsFollowing two years of research and development, scientists at Surrey NanoSystems invented the world record-smashing ultra-black substance. The Newhaven, England-based nanotechnology firm isn’t spilling all of the hush-hush trade secrets as to exactly how Vantablack was engineered. We do know, however, that the material is comprised of a tightly woven thatch of carbon nanotubes — each 10,000 times finer than a single strand of human hair — sprouted on sheets of aluminum foil. Sprouted as in grown. Yes, this stuff is definitely far out.In case you’re wondering, the “vanta” part of the goth band-sounding name for the nanofiber signifies “vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays.”Related: Novartis, Google to Develop Contact Lenses to Monitor Blood SugarThe “black to end all blacks” was unveiled this week at the Farnborough International Airshow, a week-long trade show for insiders from the international aerospace and defense industries. As you might expect, showing off the material to military entities is hardly a coincidence. Surrey NanoSystems says it already shipped orders of the surreal substance to its first clients in the defense and space sectors and is stepping up production efforts to meet their demands.Imagine seeing — or, rather, not seeing — military aircraft and other war machines covered in Vantablack, lurking in the dark of night. (Though, we think Vantablack-clad ninjas would be pretty cool, too.)In the way of non-military uses, we could eventually see Vantablack replace the Aeroglaze Z306 polyurethane black coating found inside aerospace industry telescopes used to “see the faintest of stars,” as hinted at by Surrey NanoSystems chief technical officer Ben Jensen in a recent press announcement about the historic black breakthrough.  Related: Get This: A Cooler That Uses Dirt to Keep Your Beers Cool Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global July 18, 2014 3 min readcenter_img Register Now » Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box.last_img read more
