Girl Scouts who can identify and prevent cyberattacks.Security firm Palo Alto Networks and Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) have teamed up to premier 18 national Girl Scout cybersecurity badges. The first in the series will roll out in September 2018 to girls in grades K-12.A huge proponent of science, technology, engineering, and math, Girl Scouts has embraced the STEM curriculum to inspire participants to embrace and celebrate curiosity and learning.“Our mission to prevent cyber attacks and restore trust in the digital age is only achievable if we make meaningful investments not just in technology but also in people,” Palo Alto Networks CEO Mark McLaughlin said in a statement.Existing Girl Scout insignia—including the naturalist, digital art, innovation, and financial literacy badges—make special use of STEM activities. But there is always room to grow.According to Cybersecurity Ventures, the worldwide deficit of qualified cyber security professionals will reach 3.5 million by 2021. And not many of those will be women.A recent study by (ISC)2 highlights a lack of female representation in the cybersecurity industry: Women hold just 11 percent of jobs globally. What’s worse, ladies often bypass careers in information technology due to a lack of knowledge about available opportunities. So, Palo Alto Networks and GSUSA sprang to action with this month’s introduction of cyber security education to millions of girls as young as five years old.“We recognize that in our increasingly tech-driven world, future generations must possess the skills to navigate the complexities and inherent challenges of the cyber realm,” Sylvia Acevedo, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA, said.“From arming our older girls with the tools to address this reality to helping younger girls protect their identities via Internet safety,” she continued, “the launch of our national cybersecurity badge initiative represents our advocacy of cyber preparedness.”Details of the program have not yet been released; the firms have another 15 months to hammer out the specifics—and give 1.8 million girls something to look forward to.“It is our hope that our collaboration will serve to cultivate our troops’ budding interest in cyber security by providing access to invaluable knowledge that may otherwise not be available to girls—in communities across the United States,” Acevedo said.“Our collaboration […] will positively influence the future of our industry by helping build tomorrow’s diverse and innovative team of problem solvers equipped to counter emerging cyber threats,” McLaughlin echoed.Let us know what you like about Geek by taking our survey.
